Powerball jackpot to hit $42 million
DES MOINES, Iowa - The Powerball jackpot is expected to reach $42 million dollars Wednesday because none of the tickets sold for the Powerball game Saturday night matched all six numbers drawn.
Saturday's winning numbers were 10-14-32-40-49
Power Play: 4
Players matching all five numbers and the Powerball would have won or shared the $33.6 million jackpot. The prize goes to an estimated $42 million for Wednesday.
Tickets that match the first five numbers, but miss the Powerball, win $200,000 each, and there were two of those. They were sold in: Indiana and Montana.

Democrats bank early votes in battleground states
WASHINGTON - Two weeks before Election Day, Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama is busily banking every early vote he can get in key states. Republican nominee John McCain is more selectively working to lock in the early votes of his most iffy supporters, figuring the rest will make it to the polls sooner or later.
Voters in every state can now cast ballots through early voting or absentee voting programs. Results won't be released until Nov. 4, but a look at those who have voted shows the Democrats have been aggressive.
In Georgia, Iowa, North Carolina and Ohio, Democrats - or at least those living in heavily Democratic areas - are requesting and submitting ballots in large numbers. In Florida, Republicans hold an edge, while in Indiana, absentee voting has been split among Republican and Democratic areas.

Authorities: Georgia Law Firm Bomb Suspect Died in Blast
The elderly suspect in a Friday morning blast that rocked a Georgia law firm died in the explosion, according to investigators, but his motive was still unclear.

Investigators said later Friday afternoon that the person whose body was found was the 71-year-old man believed responsible. McManus told The Daily Citizen that the suspect is Lloyd Cantrell, but that wasn't immediately confirmed by police.

ROANOKE, Va. -- Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama said Friday that Republican rival John McCain wants to cut $882 billion from Medicare over a decade to finance his health care plan and the result would be more costly drugs, diminished services and lower quality care for seniors.
"It's entirely consistent with Sen. McCain's record during his 26 years in Congress where, time and again, he's opposed Medicare," Obama said. "In fact, Sen. McCain has voted against protecting Medicare 40 times."
Campaign officials said the $882 billion estimate was drawn in part from a study by the Center for American Progress, a public policy organization stocked with prominent Democrats.
In response, McCain's campaign issued a statement saying Obama was "simply lying." The statement said the Republican planned to trim spending, but said his plans "do not cut a single benefit."

Hurricane Norbert nears Mexico's Baja California
LA PAZ, Mexico - Fishermen pulled in their boats and hotels warned tourists away from beaches Friday as Hurricane Norbert strengthened to a Category 2 storm and bore down on Mexico's southern Baja California Peninsula.
Norbert, with winds of 100 mph, was expected to hit land early Saturday along a relatively unpopulated stretch of coastline north of the resort of Cabo San Lucas. A hurricane warning was issued for the west coast of Baja California, from Puerto San Andresito to Agua Blanca. Forecasters said it would weaken somewhat before hitting land.
Under overcast skies, fishermen pulled their boats onto beaches in La Paz, a port town in the peninsula's eastern coast. Yellow flags were up on beaches, warning people to stay out of the water

Penn State trading cards tout academics, not athletes
Penn State trading cards tout academics, not athletes
By Genaro Armas, Associated Press
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. — Perennial college football powerhouse Penn State University is promoting glossy trading cards similar to those collected by sports fans. Only, there's no card for Hall of Fame football coach Joe Paterno or any of his Nittany Lions.
The 10-card set showcases top faculty members. Glaciologist Richard Alley is a featured academic star, as is entomologist James Tumlinson.
"We have many great faculty, and they are surely worthy of the accolades our society often lavishes on athletes, coaches, and celebrities in the entertainment world," school president Graham Spanier wrote in an e-mail to The Associated Press.
"We hope the cards will remind people of the important work being done by our leading scholars," he said.
The Penn State Alumni Association paid to produce the cards, which aren't for sale. Instead, they're giveaways at tailgate parties that Spanier hosts on weekends of home football games — though a set or two can be found in a reception area at an office in the Old Main administration building.

Some traders start calling stock market rout a 'crash'
By Jeffrey Stinson and Paul Wiseman, USA TODAY
NEW YORK — In another roller-coaster day on Wall Street, stocks continued their historic downward plunge as investors fled stocks to get out of the way of a bruising bear market that some traders are now describing as a crash.
The heavy selling carried over from Thursday's late-day plunge to the start of trading Friday. The Dow Jones industrial average plunged almost 700 points right at the open, mounted a full recovery that put the Dow in the black for a few minutes, before selling off again. At 2:00 ET, the Dow was down 556 points to 8023, extending its year-to-date losses to 39.5%.

Kentucky's Creation Museum reports 550,000 visitors since opening
Kentucky's Creation Museum reports 550,000 visitors since opening
By Dylan T. Lovan, Associated Press Writer
LOUISVILLE — The museum exhibits are taken from the Old Testament, but the special effects are pure Hollywood: a state-of-the-art planetarium, animatronics and a massive model of Noah's Ark, all intended to explain the origins of the universe from a biblical viewpoint.
The Creation Museum, which teaches life's beginnings through a literal interpretation of the Bible, is claiming attendance figures that would make it an unexpectedly strong draw less than a year and a half after it debuted. More than a half-million people have toured the Kentucky attraction since its May 2007 opening, museum officials said.
For creationists — Christians who believe the Bible's first chapter of Genesis is the literal telling of the universe's start — the museum is a godsend. Many have returned with family and friends, some from faraway states arguing it's one of the few with a Christian worldview.

WASHINGTON -- Key supporters of a Wall Street bailout package prodded lawmakers to approve the plan hours ahead of a difficult House vote on Monday, with President Bush saying it is needed to "keep the crisis in our financial system from spreading throughout our economy."
"Every member of Congress and every American should keep in mind that a vote for this bill is a vote to prevent economic damage to you and your community," said Bush, fully aware that congressional passage of the $700 billion compromise legislation is far from assured.
"With this strong and decisive legislation," he said, "we will help restart the flow of credit so American families can meet their daily needs and American businesses can make purchases, ship goods and meet their payrolls."
The package cleared a key procedural hurdle on the House floor Monday morning with a 220-198 vote to move it to three hours of general debate and a final vote, likely by midday or early afternoon.

Bush signs historic $700B bailout bill into law
WASHINGTON — With the economy on the brink and elections looming, Congress approved an unprecedented $700 billion government bailout of the battered financial industry on Friday and sent it to President Bush for his certain signature.
The final vote, 263-171 in the House, a comfortable margin that was 58 more votes than it garnered on Monday. The vote capped two weeks of tumult in Congress and on Wall Street, punctuated by daily warnings that the country confronted the gravest economic crisis since the Great Depression if lawmakers failed to act.

High storm activity predicted
High storm activity predicted
By Doyle Rice and Oren Dorell, USA TODAY
Hurricane forecasters at Colorado State University say weather patterns indicate that October will see above-average Atlantic storm activity.
One storm could become a "major hurricane" of Category 3 or higher (on a scale of 1 to 5), with winds higher than 111 mph. Overall, the Tropical Meteorology Project expects activity to be nearly twice the activity of the average October.
"We continue to observe low sea-level pressures and warm sea-surface temperatures across the tropical Atlantic," says Phil Klotzbach, lead author of the hurricane forecast. "A combination of these two factors typically leads to an active October."

Gas shortages ease up in Southeast
By Larry Copeland, USA TODAY
ATLANTA — The Southeast heads into the weekend facing less severe gas shortages than a week ago, although the Energy Department expects scarce supplies to linger for a week or two.
Atlanta and Charlotte, the metropolitan areas most affected by fuel shortages caused by Hurricanes Gustav and Ike, have seen improvement — more so here than in Charlotte.
Gas lines here were shorter and less common Thursday than last week. All 111 QuikTrip stations in metropolitan Atlanta had gas Thursday — up from just 25%-50% a week ago, company spokesman Mike Thornbrugh says

Bush Signs Spending Bill That Includes Auto Loans

WASHINGTON -- President Bush has signed a sprawling, stopgap spending bill to keep the government running for the next 12 months.
The president's Tuesday move, which came on the last day of the government's budget year, was expected even though the measure spends more money and contains more pet projects than he would have liked. The legislation is one of the few bills this election year that simply had to pass.
The $630 billion-plus spending bill wraps together a record Pentagon budget with aid for automakers and natural disaster victims, and increased health care funding for veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan.
The measure also lifts a quarter-century ban on oil drilling off the Atlantic and Pacific coasts, a victory for Bush and fellow Republicans.
